First of all we would like to wish you a Happy New Year.
In 2020/21 there were over 267,000 burglaries in England and Wales, a significant decline of over 116 thousand when compared with the previous reporting year. There are a few different ways in which you can reduce the chance of becoming a victim of burglary. Here are a few tips to help you keep your home safe and secure from trespassers.
How can I protect my home?

Dahua CCTV Solutions
CCTV – Having a CCTV System is a deterrent for burglars but can also be used to collect evidence if a crime is committed. We have a range of IP systems to suit most sensible budgets, whether an inexpensive simple system for home use or high-definition megapixel systems for home or business. The systems we install allow you to monitor your footage on your phone, tablet, or desktop PC – anywhere in the world.
PIR Floodlights – Burglars are more likely to target homes that sit in the darkness as it provides them with more places to hide. To counter-act this install PIR floodlights that illuminate when they sense motion, this will deter any unwanted visitors from targeting your home. Floodlights are also one of the most cost effective and simple ways to protect your home with wireless battery powered units coming in at around £25.
Intruder Alarm – Installing an Intruder Alarm is a good way to protect your home. Research by criminologists and professionals found that burglars said that a home with an alarm fitted was a lesser target. At MMV we are fully trained and qualified to install intruder alarms in commercial and domestic dwellings, designing systems specifically to your home/business, maximising the protection provided. One thing to note is that the systems we install can all be controlled and monitored via a mobile app on your smart device. In some cases, having an intruder alarm has been known to provide a cost saving on your home insurance.

Bell Box – Having a box on the wall is all well and good but it is important to make sure that the company advertised are still operating and that the box is kept clean otherwise when burglars look up and see a box that appears to be inactive or outdated, they may not be deterred. One option to consider may be a dummy box, although these aren’t always advised they can act as a deterrent for as little as £10 and again might just be enough to make a potential burglar look elsewhere.
Forgot your Keys – We’ve all been there, gone out and then realised we’ve left our keys at home but try to resist leaving keys under the mat or under a pot in the garden because just like us this is the first place a burglar will look and if he finds it before you do then you’re in trouble as you’ve just given them a free pass to enter your home. To prevent this happening why not consider leaving a key with a trusted neighbour instead.
Change the Locks – Have you lost a set of keys? Are you moving into a new home? In these instances, we would always recommend that you change the locks right away! Unless you change the locks there’s no way of knowing who could have a set of keys to your home.

Hide Valuables – Leaving valuables such as laptops, mobile phones and jewellery on display leaves you susceptible to burglaries as most burglaries are opportunistic meaning that before they saw your valuables, they didn’t have the intention of taking them. Try to keep your expensive items stored away when they’re not being used.
Look after your home – Making sure that your property is well maintained is a good deterrent for opportunists. Overgrown grass, trees and bushes can imply that the homeowner is away or that the house is now vacant. Simply make sure that your property looks lived in, if you/re going away just ask a neighbour to keep an eye out for you.
Get to know your neighbours! If you all look out for each other and inform your neighbours of anything suspicious it’s likely that they’ll do the same for you – if you have 4/5 different sets of eyes looking out for your property it can go a long way!
